Washington DC—our nation's capital, truth's backyard, and a place of policy change and activism—has become a hub for advocacy with truth at all levels of power. In DC, a 2022 law made the sale of all flavored tobacco products, and sale of tobacco near schools, illegal—but community members and advocates alike are still finding these products available in the community.

NextGen Community Leaders, in partnership with DC Health
Throughout 2024, DC Community Leaders Nia N., Domenique R., and Chrisean H. made moves across the district to educate their peers, share quitting resources, and train the next generation of future activists. They reached over 500 student leaders through community-based organizations like Sasha Bruce, DC area schools like Howard University and Bowie State, and even reached decision makers at events through the Congressional Black Caucus and the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council's Menthol Funeral. Let's go, DC!
DC AG Brian Schwalb received $15 million from a settlement with Juul Labs. Schwalb said, “JUUL preyed on children for profit, implementing an intentionally deceptive, manipulative marketing campaign targeting underage users with the intention of creating addicted customers... JUUL knew how addictive and dangerous its products were and actively tried to cover up that medical truth." Some of the settlement dollars will be used directly to mitigate the public health damages Juul’s products caused, including cessation assistance, prevention and education programs, and research on ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery System) products. Schwalb went even further in January 2025, joining a bipartisan coalition of nine AGs coordinating actions to hold companies accountable for unlawfully manufacturing, distributing, selling and marketing flavored disposable e-cigarette products.
