Not only are menthol cigarettes appealing to young, first-time smokers, but Big Tobacco has used them to target underserved communities for decades. Menthols are the last flavored cigarettes left on the market, and it's time they joined their other flavored friends on the "banned" list. I stand with the FDA and support the proposed menthol ban. Because banning menthol means saving lives.

The Ask

Step 1: Sign your name to support the FDA’s proposed ban on menthol cigarettes — an addictive product that’s easier to start smoking and harder to quit.

Step 2: Share a menthol fact on social and report back with a screenshot.

The Big Idea

In case you haven’t heard, the FDA recently proposed a ban on menthol, which is HUGE. Menthol cigarettes, which are mint-flavored, are the only flavored cigarettes left on the market. This is a BIG problem, especially since the FDA banned every other flavored cigarette for being super attractive to young, first-time smokers. In fact, 81% of youth who have ever used tobacco started with a flavored product.

Needless to say, we’ve got the FDA’s back on this one, and we know you do too. It’s time for menthol cigarettes to join their other flavored friends on the “banned” list. There’s still a lot of work to do to make sure the ban is officially a go, but with you on our side, we know we can make it happen. Show your support for the FDA and sign your name. Because banning menthol means saving lives.

The Background

On top of appealing to first-time smokers, menthol cigarettes have been used by Big Tobacco to target underserved communities for decades. They’ve flooded majority-Black neighborhoods with menthol advertising, used LGBTQ celebrations to push menthol cigarettes, and essentinally masqueraded as allies in order to sell a deadly, toxic product. So it’s no accident that nearly 90% of African American smokers and 36% of LGBTQ smokers use menthols.

We can’t change the fact that Big Tobacco spent decades targeting vulnerable populations. But we can still turn their damage around. Because enough is enough — menthol’s gotta go.
